In AZ, can HOA come after me for payments not made during a short sale that ended in foreclosure?

My condo in AZ was foreclosed on in 2008. Recently, my HOA contacted me and they are trying to make me pay for the months not paid during my short sale, which ended in foreclosure. They are now trying to serve me. Do you know what my options are, if any? I now live in CA.

Good question. The law in Arizona generally is that you owe assessments while you own the property Even during a short sale, assessments are accruing. It would be best to get a copy of your ledger and find out what you owe, when the charges were made, etc. If they are trying to serve you, that means lawyers are involved and the debt has increased in cost. It might be wise and actually worth a bit of money to get a legal opinion from a lawyer in Arizona who helps homeowners. A legal opinion and/or a demand letter might just deter the lawyers.
