New Owner - Rent

The 4-unit property where I live in California was passed on to one of the lenders at a Foreclosure auction on July 10. The former owner was not putting the rent money she received from the tenants towards her loan payments. I did not pay the old owner May or June rent, due to all of the ongoing legal battles she had (bankruptcy, fraud). I sent letters to the old owner informing her that I wouldn't be paying rent. She never challenged that.
The new property management company is asking for the May, June and ALL of July rent (not just a prorated amount based on when the property transferred to the new owner.)
I am wondering if they are legally allowed to ask for rent for a period of time when they weren't the owner.
